Rock Against Cancer

Amber is 21 years old and has Ewing’s Sarcoma. She has been fighting this cancer since she was 14 years old. It all started when Amber was conditioning for track and thought she pulled something in her right arm. Her dad took her to the doctor for an x-ray and that’s when the first tumor was found. Amber has had several surgeries, radia-tion, and chemo on her right arm. When that didn’t work the doctors tried research drugs. This helped the cancer go into remission for a while. Spots showed up on her lungs and pelvis Amber had to go through another round of chemo and radiation. The doctors finally had to put in an antibiotic rod in her right arm and now Amber no longer has elbow movement. Amber’s arm and pelvis are both clear now, but she is still fighting the two spots on her lungs.

Ewing’s sarcoma is a malignant round-cell tumor. It is a rare disease in which cancer cells are found in the bone or in soft tissue. The most common areas in which it occurs are the pelvis, the femur, the humerus, the ribs and clavicle. Staging attempts to distinguish pa-tients with localized from those with metastatic dis-ease. Most commonly, metastases occur in the chest, bone and/or bone marrow. Ewing’s sarcoma occurs most frequently in male teenagers, with a male/female ratio of 1.6:1. Five-year survival for localized disease is 70% to 80% when treated with chemother-apy. Long term survival for metastatic disease can be less than 10% but some sources state it is 25-30%.
